Infographic on workforce performance and cost of inaction.

THE MODEL

Three workforce costs. One clearer business case.

The calculator uses your organization’s own assumptions to estimate three areas where workforce performance issues can create measurable financial pressure.

01 — ABSENCE

Avoidable Absence Cost

Estimates the compensation value associated with potentially avoidable employee absence.

02 — TURNOVER

Voluntary Turnover Cost

Estimates the financial impact of replacing employees based on your workforce size, turnover rate, compensation, and replacement-cost assumption.

03 — PERFORMANCE

On-the-Job Performance Friction

Models the potential value of productive capacity affected by disengagement, stress, distraction, or other workforce-performance barriers.

Together, these estimates create your organization’s modeled Annual Cost of Inaction.

THE EVIDENCE BEHIND THE OPPORTUNITY

The cost of workforce health and performance challenges is measurable.

Vitality360 does not assume that every wellness initiative produces the same financial return. Our calculator is designed differently: it uses your organization's own assumptions to understand the potential cost of inaction and the improvement required to justify an investment. Independent research helps explain why these workforce costs deserve attention.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

Mental Health at Work

WHO estimates that 12 billion working days are lost globally each year to depression and anxiety, contributing approximately $1 trillion annually in lost productivity. WHO also recommends organizational interventions, manager training, worker training and other evidence-based actions to protect and promote mental health at work.

Making the Business Case for Worker Well-Being

The CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports that chronic diseases and injuries cost U.S. employers more than half a trillion dollars in lost productivity each year. It also states that comprehensive efforts to promote worker well-being and reduce workplace risks can improve productivity, performance and organizational outcomes.

Systematic Review of Workplace Prevention ROI

A 2023 systematic review examined 138 workplace prevention interventions. Of them, 56.5% reported a positive ROI, while 8.7% reported negative ROI; others were neutral or could not determine ROI. The researchers also cautioned that results differed by study quality and design—which is exactly why we model scenarios rather than promise returns.

HOW TO READ THE MODEL

This tool helps you estimate the size of the opportunity—not predict guaranteed outcomes.

Modeled Annual Cost of Inaction
This is the estimated financial pressure created by the absence, turnover, and performance-friction assumptions you entered.

Break-Even Improvement Required
This shows how much of that modeled cost would need to be positively influenced for the entered investment to pay for itself.

Improvement Scenario
This lets you explore a possible planning scenario using your own assumptions. It is not a promise of results.

Use this tool to inform the conversation, not replace sound judgment.

NEXT STEP

Numbers are more useful when they lead to the right decision.

If you want help thinking through your results, available wellness funding, or the best starting point for your organization or client, Vitality360 can help you translate the model into a practical next step.
